We are pleased to announce the Digital Humanities at Berkeley funded grants. There was an overwhelming response to the call, particularly in the area of collaborative research. Research IT looks forward to continuing to support both funded and unfunded projects with consulting and technical assistance. All collaboration greatly benefits the Digital Humanities at Berkeley program as outlined by the Andrew W. Mellon grant: Capacity Building and Integration in the Digital Humanities.

2014 was a busy year for on-campus hackathons, particularly in the digital humanities realm. (What is a hackathon? Read more here).  Working with partners at the Library and the Phoebe A.

Mary Elings, Head of Digital Collections at the Bancroft Library, recently presented a talk, “Archives-Based Digital Humanities Projects: Transformative Potential at Institutions Large and Small” at the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI).  

The Center for Tebtunis Papyri will be co-hosting a workshop on Digital Humanities and Egyptology with the Townsend Center for the Humanities and the Department of Near Eastern Studies.  Organized by Rita Lucarelli, Assistant Professor of Egyptology in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, the workshop will explore topics of digital collaboration, collections metadata, 3D visualization.  

First session (open to public)

The Berkeley Digital Humanities Working Group and Computing and the Practice of History will be co-hosting Ted Underwood on February 12th for two special events at the D-Lab.  Trained as a Romanticist, Ted teaches 18th and 19th century British literature at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.  His research combines information science and literary criticism by applying machine learning algorithms to large digital collections.

Prosopography, the identification and disambiguation of name instances and the study of the interactions and life histories of the people involved, is at the core of many humanities research agendas. Berkeley Prosopography Services (BPS) is a digital tool kit for the disambiguation of namesakes in text corpora, computation of  social network metrics, and generation of  interactive visualizations of those networks.
